How might we produce water in the future to sustain greenery and urban gardening?
Water Collection for Urban Gardening
By 2030, scientists predict a big shortage of water. We won't have enough and "luxury" activities like private gardening and greeneries will become unaffordable for the average citizen. So how could we use natural resources to sustain urban gardening in 2030?
Umeå Institute of Design // Urban Gardening 2030 // 10 weeks // Team project with Janis Beinerts // Collaboration with Husqvarna Group and Gardena
To understand the difficulties with urban gardening, we collectively visited places in Umeå - North of Sweden and Malmö - South of Sweden, to learn more about what it takes to successful garden and how it works inside communities. This revealed the upcoming challenges for the future and the problem areas in plant watering.

“Ideally the green objects don’t need any maintenance / watering
and need as little human attention as possible.”
Odla I stan, Malmö
“Watering is very costly. In summer a truck drives around the city several times per week to fill up the water bags.”
“We wanted to do the gardening, but there was no access to water.”
Ålidhem Community, Umeå
“Watering plants the right amount is tricky.
A lot of water is wasted.”
Defining the concept
Aero is a water humidity harvester created for urban gardening communities. With innovative technology it absorbs water molecules passively with polymer coated cotton membranes. Twisting motions are applied to harvest up to 200L of water per day to be shared. The cotton with PNIPAAm can store water up to 350% of its weight.
- Powered by its own solar energy to be able to support the water collection process in an environmentally friendly way
- Gardening application for smart watering
- Smart dosing feeders - connect back with Aero to ensure proper water guidance
MAGNETIC WATERING HOSE SYSTEM
The magnetic hose connection system ensures easy and secured watering. If you are away or on holiday, other community members cannot accidently detach your watering hose, which provides a controlled watering process.
Business system of Aero
Aero is designed to be used by a community and to make people connect during gardening. The apparatus can be purchased by a landlord of a residence building or by a community circle who has passion for gardening. The landlord can provide the Aero for a membership to his residents, which is a low cost for them and offers the possibility to sustain their own greenery. For the landlord, it is an advantage to promote greenery in his building, as it gets more and more popular to utilize "dead" space on rooftop areas.
In case of maintenance, a third company is getting notified by Aero itself, which leaves the landlord with less responsibility and a well organised system. For Gardena, the brand who sells Aero, it has a promotional factor. People are more likely to buy gardening tools from a brand, they already own a product from.
Aero comes in 2 sizes to fit into a community garden as well as on a private balcony.
If the balcony is located in an insuffiecient sun area / shadow, Aero-mini can be connected to the electric house grid to power the water harvesting process.
An integrated water hose that can be pulledfor easier access to plants. Water pressure can be turned on and off directly from its nozzle, so no water is spilled out when moving from one watering spot to another. The interaction and water leves are on the top surface for easier access.
